- | Introduction |
- ----------------
-
- Lightning is a simple utility to calculate the distance between you and
- lightning. It simply measures the time between the flash and the sound of the
- thunder, and converts that time to distance. The conversion factor used is
- 340 m/s, which is the speed of sound in air at 20 degrees C at sea level.
-
- Lightning is designed to be small, quick, and extremely easy to use. There are
- no gimicky graphics and you don't need a stylus to use it. It includes an
- option to intelligently control the backlight; where I live, most of the
- thunderstorms we get roll in after dark.
-
- When you see the flash of lightning, start the timer by pressing the hardware
- Up button. The readouts become blanked out and the word "Running" appears in
- the lower right corner of the display. When you hear the thunder, stop the
- timer by pressing the Up button again. The readouts update with the elapsed
- time and the calculated distance.
-
- The Stay on option is provided so that you can prevent your device's auto off
- timer from turning it off. This way, your lightning timer is always ready; you
- don't have to fumble for the power button to turn the device on before you can
- start the timer. If you switch to a different app, the auto off timer will
- resume its normal operation, but when you switch back to Lightning, the auto
- off timer will once again be disabled. Be careful when using this option, as
- it is a very easy way to drain your batteries.
-
- If you have Control backlight enabled, the backlight turns off when you start
- the timer, and it turns on when you stop the timer. In addition, you can
- toggle the state of the backlight by pressing the hardware Down button.

-
- If you have suggestions, comments, constructive criticism, or questions,
- please let me know. Even though Lightning is freeware, it is my intention
- that any software I release to the public is well-designed, robust, and
- essentially bug-free. If you encounter a bug, please let me know!
-
- The most recent version of Lightning has been thoroughly tested on
- Palm OS 3.1.1, both on real hardware and under emulation, and on all other
- versions of Palm OS under emulation. There are no known bugs.
